Smart sells electric vehicles in Australia, including the Smart #1 and #3. These models use Type 2 AC charging, but their onboard AC charging capabilities vary by variant and equipment specification.

Smart Australia confirms that certain Premium and BRABUS configurations support AC charging up to 22 kW on suitable electrical infrastructure. This does not mean every Smart variant supports 22 kW. A conventional single-phase home charger can still be practical for overnight charging.

Smart owners should check their exact model and variant before deciding between single-phase and three-phase charging equipment. Home electrical capacity, cable selection, parking location and any solar or load-management requirements should also be considered.

Smart EV charging FAQs

Do Smart electric vehicles use Type 2 home chargers?

Current Smart electric vehicles supplied in Australia use Type 2 AC charging. A compatible tethered wallbox can connect directly, while a socketed wallbox requires a suitable separate Type 2 charging cable.

Can every Smart EV charge at 22 kW AC?

No. Smart Australia identifies 22 kW AC capability on certain Premium and BRABUS configurations of the #1 and #3. Charging capability depends on the exact variant, so owners should verify their vehicle's specification before selecting a charger.

Will a three-phase charger always be faster for my Smart?

Not always. A three-phase charger can provide higher charging power only when the vehicle supports it and the property has the necessary electrical supply. A vehicle with a lower onboard AC charging limit will not use the wallbox's full 22 kW capability.

Does a Smart EV come with a charging cable?

Smart Australia states that charging cables for the #1 and #3 may be supplied as optional accessories rather than included as standard. Check what comes with your particular vehicle before choosing a socketed home charger.

Can I charge my Smart using home solar power?

Yes. Solar generation can contribute to charging a Smart EV. Automatic charging from surplus solar depends on compatible charger controls, monitoring equipment and correct installation. The vehicle's Type 2 connector alone does not provide that function.
